Mangifera indica

Mango season has finally arrived with lots of ripening sweet tropical mangoes. Locally known as “Manga”, this tropical mango variety is poly-embryonic and holds true from seed; a single seed germinates several sprouts, which ultimately grows to a single plant/tree, and bears fruit as the parent mango tree. Not only is this variety edible when ripe, it is also edible when fruits are young and immature; small, immature and crispy unripe fruits are pickled locally or eaten raw and salted.

Our reading on this Mangifera indica variety indicate that it is sensitive to cold; flowering and fruit set would be seriously affected at approximately 40*F, and damage to leaves and twigs occur at 30*F.

Grows best in deep soils in most soil types and reaches 30′ to 100′ ft. in height. Fruits ripen to yellow, yellow orange to blush red or reddish pink. Seed is planted concave edge down 1″ inch deep in porous well draining soil in 1/2 to 1 gallon pot or bag. Seed germinates in 3 to 6 weeks. Allow seedling to grow for 6 to 12 months in pot / bag until reaching 12″ to 18″ inches in height before transplanting to ground. Seed germination guaranteed.
