Averrhoa carambola
Locally known as “Bilembines”, this tropical fruit is slightly sweet and goes well with toss salad, fruit salad and as dish garnishing. A great addition to any fruit farm or home garden.
Simple and easy to grow, and grows well in containers in warm climates. Plant seed 1/2″ inch deep in porous well draining soil in 2″ – 4″ inch planter cup. Place in warm sunny to partly sunny location and keep moist; seed should sprout in approx. 15 to 30 days, sometimes longer. Once seedling outgrows planter cup, transplant into 1/2 – 1 gallon pot/bag, and allow to grow for 6 to 10 months until reaching 12″ – 18″ inches in height before transplanting to ground or very large pot (20+ gallons).
Water and fertilize regularly for speedy growth and fruit bearing. The Averrhoa carambola grows up to 25′ ft. in height (smaller if grown in pot) and bears fruit in approx. 5 yrs. Protect plant from frost and extremely cold weather.
